If you ever stop and listen to young children playing, they are always making up roles to play, new identities and names to call themselves. Did you ever do that when you were a child? Do you remember when you stopped?
Did you ever have some adult, a parent or a teacher, tell you that it was time to grow up and stop your pretending; your day dreaming? Well, they were WRONG!
It's the dreaming that motivates us all into doing the impossible. Daring to dream is what sets the successful apart from the rest. Those who didn't listen to the adults, the Dreamsuckers, are the ones who kept trying after all the rest stopped. And many of them stopped because they believed they had to; they bought the lie.
They bought the lie that said, "growing up meant you had to let go of those dreams."
Now is the time to cast off that lie! Now is the time to revisit all those deeply buried dreams and breathe life back into them. Revisit those you held as a child; revive them if they are still a part of your hopes; reshape them if it needs doing. But whatever you do, stop listening to those people who tell you you can't do what you want to do! Don't let them steal your dreams!
Most people have attained a head full of knowledge. When actually engaged in meaningful dialogue about possibilities, they KNOW that there are many opportunities out there that they could grab on to. However, inside their heart are all the fears and doubts that they have encountered along their life's journey.
The first step to Escaping the Dreamsuckers is to take a critical look at the fears you have. If pressed, some people will admit that they fear being successful in case it doesn't change who they are and what they do.
For example, some people won't do what it takes to lose weight because they fear that when they do, all the problems they face will still be there and they have absolutely nothing to do with the weight. Then they'll be at a loss to deal with the reality they have to face. All the difficulties they had, they had blamed on the weight. Now what do they blame it on? And that fear sabotages any efforts to succeed.
By daring to face the fear, to realize it's there, to be proactive and set in motion a plan to counter the negative effects, is to move forward. To accept that this forward movement may only be a few steps at a time, is offseting the negative effects with positive energy.
The second step is to consider the doubts. Why do they exist? Who or what put them there in the first place? Each doubt is usually based on the personal belief that somehow they are not worthy of the dream. This belief is often based on perceptions rather than truth. So, a search for the truth must ensue.
The truth can be hard to find. False perceptions may have been believed for so long that it's hard to let them go even when finding that the truth says you are worthy; you are capable; you are entitled to pursue your dreams; you CAN DO IT!
Personally, I found that the most effective way to handle both the fears and the doubts was through extensive reading. By choosing to immerse myself in the knowledge that people like Brian Tracy, Dr. Spencer Johnston, Dale Carnegie, Napolean Hill, Stephen Covey and many other self-improvement gurus have written volumes about, I could align my thinking to theirs.
They gave me hope. They gave me a new belief. In my dreams and in myself! They drowned out the voices of my fears and doubts and set me free. They will do the same for you and then you, too, can Escape the Dreamsuckers.
